1.0 Purpose
1.1 To establish a formal procedure for the cleaning and drying of glassware in laboratory.
2.0 Scope
2.1 This SOP is applicable for cleaning, drying, and storage of all glassware used for analysis in the Laboratory of “NAME” Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
3.0 Responsibility
3.1 Laboratory attendant performs the activity as per procedures.
3.2 Officers are responsible to monitor the activity as per procedures.
3.3 Head of Quality Control is responsible for the implementation of this SOP.
3.4 Head of Quality Assurance is responsible for the compliance of this SOP.
4.0 Abbreviations and Definitions
4.1 SOP : Standard Operating Procedure
4.2 Cleaning Agent: An agent for the removal from facility and equipment surfaces of product residues that may inactivate sanitizing agents or harbor microorganisms.
4.3 Sanitizing Agent: An agent for reducing, on inanimate surfaces, the number of all forms of microbial life including fungi, viruses, and bacteria.

6.0 Precaution / Health and Safety Considerations
6.1 Ware water-resistant heavy rubber gloves and musk during glassware cleaning operations.
6.2 Do not overload sinks, dishwashers or soaking bins.
6.3 Never use strong alkaline agents, abrasive cleansers which may otherwise damage the glassware.
6.4 Clean glassware carefully with brush to prevent cut and glassware breakage.
7.0 Procedure
7.1 General cleaning and segregation:
7.1.1 After completion of analysis, analyst himself will keep all glassware in the cleaning area.
7.1.2 Laboratory attendant will collect all these glassware and transfer them to wash basin.
7.1.3 Glassware with microbial growth should be separated from those without growth and decontaminated by autoclaving and then clean properly.
7.1.4 Drain the contents of glassware in wash basin with running tap water.
7.1.5 Check the glassware for any crack and discard the cracked or broken glassware if any, in the designated glass disposal bin. Record the broken glassware (if any) details in “Glassware breakage register”.
7.1.6 Remove all tapes and labels and also remove any type of marking on glassware with cotton soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
7.1.7 Segregate glassware according to their dirtiness into two parts: non-oily, less Dirty, easy to clean glassware and oily/ greasy, more dirty glassware.
7.2 Cleaning of non-oily, less dirty easy to clean glassware:
7.2.1 Rinse all glassware with water and soak in detergent solution for minimum 10 minutes.
7.2.2 Take out glassware one after another, clean them from inside using suitable brush and from outside with suitable scrubber.
7.2.3 Drain detergent solution and flush glassware by running tap water to remove detergent.
7.2.4 Rinse glassware with purified water twice and keep inverted in suitable tray or stand to drain water completely.
7.3 Cleaning of oily / greasy more dirty glassware:
7.3.1 Take hot water (temperature about 70°C) in a bin and soak oily / greasy more dirty glassware for minimum 10 minutes.
7.3.2 Drain the hot water, take out glassware, and ensure that oily materials are removed.
7.3.3 Rinse all glassware with tap water and soak in detergent solution for minimum 10 minutes.
7.3.4 Take out glassware one after another, clean glassware from inside using suitable brush and from outside with suitable scrubber, remove label (if present) and stains of sticking material.
7.3.5 Drain detergent solution and flush glassware with running tap water to remove detergent.
7.3.6 Rinse glassware with purified water twice and keep inverted in suitable tray or stand to drain water completely.
7.4 Drying and storage or glassware’s:
7.4.1 After complete draining off of the water from the washed glassware, transfer the glassware to drying oven, the temperature of oven at 80°C.
7.4.2 Wipe the volumetric glassware’s either with methanol or with acetone to remove the markings.
7.4.3 Close the door of the oven and operate the oven at 80°C for 2 hours as per operating procedures.
7.4.4 After completion of drying, switch off the oven and allow glassware’s to cool.
